I decided to take a rest from riding today. I feel good, but when I wait for a reason to take a day off, like an injury, it's usually too late to fully recover in 24 hours. I'm going to schedule days off more regularly than usual to make sure my body has the time it needs to recover and stay fresh for what I'm sure will be grueling rides ahead.
With my time off, I took a stroll around Laugerbakki, which is to say I walked down the street to the local hotel and back. It's a nice looking place with a restaurant and bar, but I was happy with my little guesthouse room at less than a quarter of the price.
My walk gave me a glimpse of what I was anticipating, but had yet to deal much with, on this trip; the wind and rain. Dense clouds surrounded our tiny pocket of the region, raining everywhere except right where I was. Even without the rain, the wind was strong, and will pose a serious challenge if (when) I have to ride against it. I'm certain to ride into this tomorrow.
Other than that, I just rested and mentally prepared for what will certainly be a wet and dreary ride tomorrow. Forecast for the region calls for steady rain over the next 10 days. Woo hoo!
Side note - dozens of these buggers have been terrorizing me each day. They swarm around squaking, chasing me as I ride. I'm okay when I'm riding, but if I stop to take a picture, they assume I've declared war and fly right at me for an attack. Apparently they nest on the ground, so they're very territorial when intruders encroach. I managed to take a quick picture today without getting attacked. Say hello to the Arctic Tern. Vicious little bastard.
