Day 4 - Varmaland to Langafit Campground: 101.7 km

I had another big ride planned for today with over 600 meters of ascent. After day 2, I wasn't sure if be up for it, but I was feeling refreshed.

I left kinda early to try and pick up sandwiches from the corner store back on N1, but I think my other cyclist buddies beat me to it because they were cleaned out at 8am. I opted for a small container of potato salad that I ate in the spot. It was delicious.

In spite of needing to lighten my load. I brought an extra two litres of water with me today, on top of the two I usually carry. It's weight I don't need, but I want to avoid relying on streams to get me through in a pinch.

My plan for this ride was to just take it sloooow. I had 500 meters of climbing on the first 50km, and I'm wasn't sure how that was going to go. As it turned out, it went quite well. As long as the ascents are slow and gradual, I've got nothing to worry about. In fact, nothing about today's ride was eventful at all. Weather was perfect, maybe a bit too hot, if you can believe it.

The scenery was surreal, as usual. It looked to me like someone took iconic geographic features from a bunch of other countries and smashed them together in one landscape. It's a great backdrop to spend a day riding through.

My destination was Langafit campground - putting me officially in North Iceland! Unfortunately the site was taken over by an unruly caravan of seniors! Actually, it was a club (mostly seniors) that tours around Iceland together every summer, and this just happened to be their stop today. This left me without a campsite, but the person running the place, Regina, graciously offered me the guest house which I was more than happy to take.
