It's nice sleeping next to a waterfall. Loud white noise to drown out the other campers. If it were warmer and I wasn't so damp from my ride, it would have been a perfect night's sleep.
I woke up a 4am, which is technically an hour after sunrise (if the sun actually set). The forecast was calling for late morning showers and I was considering getting out early and covering the 70km to Vik before they hit. But 4am is 4am, and I don't do anything that early. I resigned myself to leaving at 9am so I could stop by the N1 when it opened to pick up some sandwiches and coffee. That meant I guaranteed myself another day of riding in the rain. I was not looking forward to it.
Although there wasn't much to look at, the rain held off for the first 30km. I was making good time, but I think fatigue from the past few days was sinking in. The sun still hadn't come out, and aside from the 45 minutes yesterday, I hadn't really seen it for several days. At 30km, the promised rain arrived. It was little more than a drizzle, but enough to bring down my spirits.
Grey clouds and rain for days. Part of it was definitely my body needing a break, but I think my mind needed a break as well. Too much isolation in the cold, grey and rain was getting to me and I wasn't enjoying the ride today.
I already planned a day off tomorrow, and that was all that was keeping me going for the last 40km. My legs were shot, the headwind was persistent. The last 4km getting into Vik felt like I was going backwards it was so slow. At least the rain stopped as I arrived.
I've completed about 1300km on the tour so far, with another 200km to go. I'm in the home stretch, but I'm going to slow things down so I'm not completely wiped out when I get back to Reykjavik. My knee has been talking to me again, my back feels like one giant knot, and I won't even get into saddle issues.
Enough complaining. Vik has a nice little pub and I plan to get wasted tonight. In my current state, that should take two beers.
