Today was a short ride, but it had its challenges. I faced my first real Icelandic headwind today. I was in my climbing gears going downhill just to maintain forward motion. It was constant for the middle 15kms, but died off when my direction changed. At times it would have been faster to get out and jog, I'm thankful it was only 15km to deal with. It was exhausting.
Tucked in the middle of nowhere was a cool little cafe that looked like it showcased live music, although I can't figure out where the musicians or audience would be from, there wasn't a town in either direction for at least 20kms. They had an amazing fish casserole that was labeled 'help yourself'. I asked how much that meant, and the server said to take as much as I want. She could see I was still unsure, so she clarified, "you can eat the whole thing, if you want." I ate the whole thing.
After gorging at the cafe, I headed down one side of an inlet where the headwind slowed me to a crawl. Fortunately it died off as I turned onto the other side of the inlet. The rest was smooth sailing.
I booked hostels for several days in Reykjavik in case I got there early, but even so, I have to slow my pace a bit so I don't arrive too early. Hostels were booked up last time I checked and I'm not sure I could find a vacancy at this point. I'll either start splitting up rides over a couple of days, I'll work in a couple more days off, or the weather could still ground me at any time. We'll see how the next few days go.
